It appears that Sudan’s offensive to retake Heglig has been effective. South Sudan’s President, Salva Kiir, announced today that South Sudanese troops would withdraw in three days, but there are reports that the area has already fallen to Sudanese troops. It is also possible that UN Security Council pressure and mounting pressure from the United States have resulted in South Sudan’s willingness to withdraw. Regardless, this is a sign of weakness that bodes very badly for those already suffering under the genocidal Sudanese regime.
